Bad news for Ron Paul and all other third string presidential candidates. The Secret Service, strained by a lengthy primary schedule and a flooded campaign field, is planning to borrow agents from ICE and TSA next year. Although the budget for campaign protection has increased to $110 million from $65 million in 2004, it did not for instance anticipate that it would be guarding Barack Obama as early as 3 May 2007. In addition to relying on immigration officers and federal airport screeners next year, the Secret Service will also shift 250 of its own agents from investigations to security details. At the same time, more than 100 agents are currently training for the explicit purpose of guarding George W. Bush after his retirement, and the number of officials receiving protection has doubled since 2001.
